In an age shaped by rapid change, polarization, and information overload, what helps us truly understand one another? This reflection explores the enduring power of the humanities—our stories, languages, histories, literature, and cultural traditions—to cultivate empathy, curiosity, and a deeper sense of our shared humanity. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Araceli Hernández-Laroche will draw on her experiences as an educator, public humanities scholar, and founding director of South Carolina Centro Latino (El Centro) at USC Upstate to reflect on how listening to one another’s stories can challenge stereotypes, expand our understanding, and inspire us to become more compassionate neighbors. When we learn to honor the complexity of every human story, we begin to imagine a more just and connected world
